Knives; Coppergate Dig, York, England :
Unusually, several have their handles preserved, socketed onto a solid tang integrally attached to the blade. Handles were made of horn, bone, or wood (often birch or spindle wood): one knife (which was found in this area) has two bone tubes forming the remaining part of the handle. Other knifes has two grooves parallel to the blade back with copper wire inlaid in one of them, which may have been marks identifying the quality of the blade, acting as a manufacturer’s trademark.
Sheaths; Coppergate Dig, York, England :
Leather sheaths protected knives, including those used for craft or domestic use. The largest seen here was for a seax, a knife with a one-edged blade used as a weapon. Made of calf leather folded into shape, the stitched seam lies where the cutting edge of the blade would have sat. The sheath has been beautifully decorated with interlacing and cross-hatched lines, the decoration made by drawing a blunt-ended tool across the leather when it was wet.
